All the conditions were right for an   epidemic . Doctors were powerless against infectious disease. People were weakened by war and harvest failures. Germs, the fleas which carried them, and the rats which carried the fleas, flourished in the dirty towns. Busy trade routes carried the plague from one place to another. ·          The  bubonic plague  was a painful disease, with black buboes, or swellings, in the groin and armpits, which l

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CURIOSITIES

Image
All Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded in Oslo, Norway. The founder of the Nobel Prize, Alfred Nobel, was a Swedish cosmopolitan. In his will, he declared that the Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded by a Norwegian committee.  A nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize may be submitted by any person who meets the nomination criteria. A letter of invitation to submit is not required. The names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed until 50 years later. Joseph Stalin , the Secretary General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922-1953), was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 and 1948 for his efforts to end World War II. Adolf Hitler  was nominated once in 1939.  Incredulous though it may seem today, the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939, by a member of the Swedish parliament, an E.G.C. Brandt. Answer some questions

You can watch and listen in this video the nice call to prayer from the Blue Mosque in Istanbul:   In this other video Rick Steves gives us information about the Blue Mosque:

THE FIVE PILLARS: PILGRIMAGE

Hajj or Pilgrimage is one of the five main pillars of Islam. Once a year, Muslims of every ethnic group, colour, social status, and culture gather together in Mecca and stand before the Kaaba praising Allah together. It is the journey that every sane adult Muslim must undertake at least once in their lives if they can afford it and are physically able. The Hajjis or pilgrims wear simple white clothes called Ihram, to show that everyone is equal in the eyes of Allah. Mecca is a place that is holy to all Muslims. It is so holy that no non-Muslim is allowed to enter.

BE A GOOD CITIZEN

Human beings are used to living under laws that are dictated to us by society, we have rights and responsibilities.  One important aspect for being a good citizen is to help people. Remember  that little actions make the difference. Another important thing we have to remember for being a good citizen is to have an active participation in our community. The last recommendation for being a good citizen is the respect toward the people that live around us. We have to remember that as we have rights, they have them too.

The European Language Portfolio (ELP) was developed by the Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe: to support the development of learner autonomy, plurilingualism and intercultural awareness and competence; to allow users to record their language learning achievements and their experience of learning and using languages. In our school, we have adapted the official documents to our idiosyncrasy, so we have prepared our own models, based on a joint study between the University of Cartagena and the IES "Domingo Valdivieso".  These are our documents:  Passport of the ELP
