CURIOSITY - RENAISSANCE
As you have been quite fast with the other exercise, let's try with these pieces of two paintings by one of the most important painters in the History of Art. a) In this one try to see something "strange" in the painting. What is it? Look for its author and its title. Tell me the Renaissance characteristics you can see in this painting. b) This second painting has also something "strange". Look for it and tell me. Sure you know the two famouse angels from posters, t-shirts... Look for its author and its title. Tell me the Renaissance characteristics you can see in this painting.

Try to guess in which painting you can see this jewel. Once you know the painting title and its author, tell me: a) Do you know other masterpieces of this artist? b) Do you know more painters in the same period? Tell me three and some of their works.
EL GRECO
El Greco was born in Crete. He became a master in this art form before following in the footsteps of other Greek artists and travelling to Venice to further his studies. Moving on to Rome, El Greco opened a workshop and spent a great deal of time developing his style, adopting elements of both Mannerism and the Venetian Renaissance. However, it was after relocating to Toledo, Spain that El Greco truly blossomed. There he received several major commissions and produced his best known paintings. The artist gained notoriety for his highly expressive and visionary religious works and rarely ventured away from this genre. When he did, however, he created compelling portraits, landscape paintings, mythological works and sculptures. Those produced during his later years are particularly notable for their undulating forms, epic scale and expressive distortions. El Greco regarded color as the most important element of painting, and declared that it had primacy over form. ...

THE PART FOR THE WHOLE II.
Another Renaissance painting: a) Whose toes are these? b) Who is the author? c) Did the author paint during the Quattrocento or the Cinquecento? d) Tell me the names of other painters and their artworks during the same period. You got right! It was "Lamentación sobre Cristo muerto" (The Lamentation over the Dead Christ or the Lamentation of Christ) by Andrea Mantegna, around 1480. It portrays the body Christ lying on a marble slab. He is watched over by the Virgin Mary and Saint John whose cut-off profile is behind the Virgin Mary, who are weeping for his death. The realism and tragedy of the scene are enhanced by the violent perspective , perspective is one of the features of the Renaissance.
THE PART FOR THE WHOLE (RENAISSANCE - QUATTROCENTO)
The part for the whole is a section of the program "Saber y Ganar", maybe you are familiar with it. With this part of a painting you should tell me: a) The author. Add some biographical details. b) Name of the artwork. c) Name other works by this author.

We are going to begin to learn about Renaissance. So let's try with a "the part for the whole". a) Whose hand is this? b) Who sculpted it? c) In which city? Clue: have you ever heard about the Ninja Turtles? YOUR ANSWERS WERE RIGHT! Donatello's bronze statue of David (circa 1440s) is famous as the first unsupported standing work of bronze cast during the Renaissance, and the first freestanding nude male sculpture made since antiquity. It depicts David with an enigmatic smile, posed with his foot on Goliath's head just after defeating the giant. The youth is completely naked, apart from a laurel-topped hat and boots, bearing the sword of Goliath.
